A gas mixture calculation

Partial Pressure of Gas Y

A gas cylinder contains 2.0 mol of gas X and 6.0 mol of gas Y at a total pressure of 2.1 atm. What is the partial pressure of gas Y?

The partial pressure of gas Y is 1.6 atm

Calculation

  • Total pressure = partial pressure of gas Y + partial pressure of gas X
  • Partial pressure of gas Y = moles of gas Y / total moles x total mole

Moles of gas Y = 6.0 moles

Total moles = 6.0 + 2.0 = 8 moles

Total pressure = 2.1 atm

  • Partial pressure of gas Y is therefore:
  • = 6.0 moles / 8.0 moles x 2.1 atm = 1.6 atm
A) What is the partial pressure of gas Y? B) 1.6 ATM is the answer hope this helps anyone who needs this answer.
