Anions and Their Corresponding Acids

What are anions?

An anion refers to a negatively charged ion. In a compound, there are negative and positively charged ions. Can you match each anion name on the left with the name of its corresponding acid on the right?

Matching Anions with Corresponding Acids:

Chloride ion - Hydrochloric acid

Chlorite ion - Chlorous acid

Perchlorate ion - Perchloric acid

Phosphate ion - Phosphoric acid

Phosphite ion - Phosphorous acid

Anions are negatively charged ions that are part of compounds along with positively charged ions. When looking at specific anions and their corresponding acids, we can observe the following matches:

- Chloride ion matches with Hydrochloric acid

- Chlorite ion matches with Chlorous acid

- Perchlorate ion matches with Perchloric acid

- Phosphate ion matches with Phosphoric acid

- Phosphite ion matches with Phosphorous acid

For example, when Hydrochloric acid (HCl) ionizes, it forms the chloride ion (Cl-). Similarly, the chlorite ion is found in chlorous acid. Phosphoric acid contains the phosphate ion, while phosphorous acid contains the phosphite ion.

An understanding of anions and their corresponding acids is essential in chemistry to predict how different compounds will react and interact with each other.
